Greenwich unlocks Swarm Badge at 2nd Cebu 4sqDay

2013/05/04

The 2nd Cebu Foursquare Day at Greenwich (Ayala Center Cebu) last April 17, 2013  (Wed) was quite a SUCCESS! Ideally, this should have been an April 16 (four squared) event. But since the Western world celebrated a bit later, it was delayed. BAD DECISION, since it took the fun out of unlocking the 4sqDay2013 badge, which unlocks only on the 16th!

Still, over 40 folks came to celebrate and claim official Foursquare swag. Jumpers also checked-in to help unlock a Swarm badge.

THANKS to generous host and sponsor Greenwich, attendees were treated to FREE pizza, pasta, and drinks. AND of course, blue water bottles from Foursquare!

2nd Cebu Foursquare Day Greenwich pizza

There was no program for the day, just a simple meetup with old and new friends and super-friends.

As it stands, there is no official Cebu Foursquare community (with officers, etc). However, there is a Foursquare Cebu FB Group that is intended for Cebu-based SuperUsers, wanna-be-SuperUsers, and active Foursquare users who want to clean up Cebu. There is also a Foursquare Cebu FB fan page with pictures and status updates of Cebu Foursquare Day events.

Cebu Foursquare Day

This event couldn’t have been successful without the help of co-organizers @jerminix and @karissayu. So PROPS to these awesome guys… and to Greenwich and staff!

BY THE WAY, anybody is welcome to organize the next Cebu Foursquare Day event, or even just a Swarm event. Cebu still yet has to unlock the Super Swarm (250 check-ins) badge! Think you’d be part of that history? CHECK-IN NOW!

The GREEDY BASTARDS that is Cebu City Marathon 2013

2013/01/12

Are you excited for the Cebu City Marathon 2013 tomorrow?

Of course, this amazing run brings in runners from all over the country and outside the country! Roads will be closed off for runners only, and this is the only Cebu City run that does that. So yes, I’m pretty much excited to run 21K tomorrow.

But enough of the excitement! CCM’s not as amazing as it sounds. Here are three things that  I am disappointed with CCM before it has even begun.

  1. Registration fees have increased by as much as 50%Late registration fees for 5K have increased from P600 to P800 (33%). 21K has increased from P900 to P1,200 (33%).  And finally, 42K has increased from P1,200 to P1,800 (50%). I have no words to describe this overpricing, but if you want to hear it, GREEDY BASTARDS!
  2. CCM continues to deny 21K runners finisher’s medals. What’s the big deal really? Is it so hard (and so expensive) to award those puso medals to 21K runners? If other cheaper and well-organized races can do it, why can’t CCM? Again, GREEDY BASTARDS!
  3. Shirt sizes have downsized. I would have shut up with the first two issues, but CCM plays a dirty game. You would think last year’s New Balance sizing would be the same, but it’s not. They shaved off nearly 3 inches from the Large shirt. GREEDY BASTARDS!

Shame on you, CCM! But as I run tomorrow, I will run with a smile, and forget what GREEDY BASTARDS you are! But next year, we’ll see.

Breaking Rules at Gawad Kalinga Cebu Run 2012

2012/11/25

gawas kalinga cebu run 2012 medal

It’s amazing that I completed today’s fun run, despite the negativity I was generating. I broke 2 basic rules of running (AND I do not encourage it).

  1. I did not have enough sleep. For the past 3-4 days, I barely had a good night’s rest. Last night, I only had 5 hours of sleep. But still, I pushed myself to wake up when the alarm sounded at 3:15AM. I was still so tired and sleepy, and the Lipovitan did not really help. 15 minutes into the run, I was already breathing heavily. After an hour, I just wanted to drop the race, and go home and sleep. Fortunately, last night’s motivational “Never give up” success secret from an attendee at the Digital Influencers Marketing Summit slapped me in the face. If you are going to run long distance (21K, in my case), you need to have a good rest beforehand so you feel fresh, and ready to conquer the road.
  2. I tried out new gear. I bought a New Balance 890 v2 during the Ayala Center Cebu sale a week ago, but didn’t try them out for a long run yet. I wore them to work, and ran 1.5K with them TWICE without any pain… until today. During the half part of the race, my left toe started to hurt. It’s probably just a lacing issue, so I’m going to adjust that on my next run. In case you ask, the New Balance 890 v2 doesn’t feel heavy like the Adidas Supernova Glide 4. It’s responsive and comfortable enough, but it doesn’t provide the coolness (air) I get from an Adidas Climacool Ride. At 40% off, it was a good buy. Now, if you don’t want surprises during a race, never try out new things (food – you don’t want LBM, gear, etc.) without at least testing them during your practice runs, so you can adjust any discomfort (or get at least used to it).

Violations aside, I’m just glad I finished the Gawad Kalinga Cebu Run 2012 in 2 hours and 50 minutes. Overall, it was OK. They had good hydration intervals, and two of them were Powerade, though none of them were cold. One thing I didn’t like in the race was the lack of distance markers. My GPS died after 6K (I must have pressed a button on my phone), and I didn’t bother to track after that. So I just relied on time, and turning points. Now, turning points are scary markers, because sometimes they are not placed in the middle of the race. So when I saw that I was already 2 hours at the turning point, I thought I’d finish in 4 hours, which was understandable given how tired and sleepy I was. So, minus points to the race organizer for not providing distance markers.

Digital Influencers Marketing Summit Cebu on Nov 24

2012/11/18

Did you know that CUSTOMERS can make or break a company? Of course, you do! That’s BASICS.

Imagine if you went inside a restaurant, and you didn’t like their food. Worst, you didn’t like their customer service! Now, are you going to come back to a restaurant like that? The adventurous side of you might say “maybe”, but chances are you won’t.

If somebody mentioned the name of that place, you’d probably tell them about the food poisoining you had there (OK, I’m exaggerating), and dissuade them from going there. But the bottomline is, you’re either going to shut up, or say bad things about that restaurant.

OR if you’re feeling bored, like I am right now,  you could BLOG about it. This is where things get tricky because the Internet is such a BIG, BIG place where you could have hundreds, or thousands of readers. And those readers, could make or break that restaurant.

Can you now see how powerful an experience can be if you put it out on the Internet (with facts, I hope)? You put out good words, and you influence people to experience it for themselves. You put out bad words, and you create an “issue”, which you hope will get the right attention so it can be adressed. Hopefully.

NOW, this is the part where I introduce you to Digital Influencers Marketing Summit Cebu, a one-day session where several speakers talk about influencing people through the Internet.

One of the topics includes Elections 2013, which is something I am interested in. US President Obama made use of Social Media to win in the recent elections. Did you know that his Facebook page had more Likes than Romney’s? Now, will using Social Media and advocates for the local elections have an impact? We’ll see.

What Happened at the Cebu StackOverflow Meetup

2012/06/20

The first-ever Cebu StackOverflow Meetup was a SUCCESS, thanks to the co-Organizers [Daryl Yu, Anna Umacob, Melody Sy and her DevCon cohorts], the Speakers [all six of them!], and the Sponsors [StackOverflow, DevCon Philippines, Anonymous] who made it happen!

cebu stackoverflow meetup

We had 66 RSVPs at the Meetup site, although only 40 showed up, some of them not on the RSVP list. NOT BAD, considering I expected only 40-50 attendees. More stats: 27% of them were WOMEN!

cebu stackoverflow meetup attendees

The venue was spacious enough. In fact, I think it could hold up 10 – 20 more attendees. It was also large enough that a sound system was not necessary, although we brought one anyway. But enough about that. WHAT HAPPENED?, you ask?

Frankly, I’m not going to give a summary of what each speaker said. I’m feeling lazy for notes, and I want you to go through everything instead. We got them on VIDEO for those who couldn’t come, or left the venue early:

(1) Google AppEngine Has Gone StackOverflow, by Albert Padin.

(2) Why Copy-Paste is Bad for Your Code, by Carlos Tapang.

(3) Version Control and Continuous Integration, by Greg Montaño.

(4)  Git is AWESOME. Why are You Using it Like SVN?, by Daryl Yu.

(5) Code Review Using Gerrit, by Mark Buenconsejo.

(6) Design and You, byJeremie Lim.

More pictures from the event can be found at geffchang’s FB Album and DevCon’s FB Album.

stackoverflow freebies

In case you might be asking WHY we pushed to make this happen, despite being one month delayed from the worldwide StackOverflow Meetups, the answer is SIMPLE. We  StackOverflow. We want you to know what it is all about.

It is an OPEN community where you can ASK, and get a SENSIBLE ANSWER that just keeps getting better, because people make the effort to contribute! That is why we got these Speakers together to share their knowledge, and get everybody to interact somehow.

We’re certainly open to hosting another Cebu StackOverflow Meetup next year, but We’re also inviting YOU to initiate the next Meetup. FOR DEVs, BY DEVs.

FREE Filipino Sign Language Class from GSVP

2012/04/24

I have always been interested in Sign Language, especially since I am hard of hearing. At first I thought I’d learn American Sign Language (ASL); because if you look around, all the books you’ll find are on ASL. So, I thought that’s what the Deaf here in the Philippines also use.

I was wrong.

Last year, December 2011, I passed by a registration booth at the Ayala ActiveZone that offered FREE Filipino Sign Language (FSL) classes. I asked the person-in-charge if they taught ASL. He told me to write down my questions; he was Deaf. Turns out the Gualandi Volunteer Service Programme (GSVP) only taught FSL, but I signed up anyway.

The first session started around the last week of January 2012, and took 8-9 Saturday sessions. The teacher is Deaf, but a Hearing volunteer (and Program Director) facilitated and interpreted.

Learning FSL is going frustrating at first, especially when you only know a few words (or signs) to start with. It will to be diffult to express your thoughts, or to say what you really want to say. I want you to remember that frustration when the Deaf enter the world of the Hearing. Can you  feel what they go through everyday?

But as you go along, you’ll realize that FSL is fun, and that the Deaf are amazing people to be with! They’re very expressive (just look at their faces when they’re signing!), and generally happy.

Here I am with fellow FSL classmates who finished Basic FSL last March 2012! We’re looking forward to Level 2!

So, if you’re interested in learning FSL, the Gualandi Volunteer Service Programme Inc. (GVSP) is holding another FREE Basic Filipino Sign Language (FSL) class. This is in cooperation with the Cebu Association of the Deaf (CAD), and the Gualandi Mission for the Deaf.

Cebu Unlocks its First SWARM Badge

2012/04/22

Cebu made history on Foursquare last April 16, 2012. On that day, Cebu joined the world in celebrating the 3rd Foursquare Day. From 7:45PM-10:00PM, at least 50 people (WOW!) checked-in at Bo’s Coffee in The Terraces, Ayala Center Cebu to unlock its first-ever SWARM badge.

To support the event, Bo’s Coffee offered FREE DRINK UPSIZE to those who checked-in at their venue. In another corner, Foursquare freebies were given away to Foursquare fans. Simple, but FUN!

In other parts of the country, Davao celebrated Foursquare Day with food and games! Meanwhile, in Manila, @4sqPhilippines organized a post-Foursquare Day event at Fitness First with cupcakes and group exercise.

So, what’s next, now that Cebu has had its SWARM badge? Well, I challenge these organizers to level up! Can Cebu unlock a SUPER SWARM badge, with 250 check-ins? We’ll see.

NOTE: If you’re a business in Cebu, and would like a #4sqCling sticker for your glass door or window, post below. Click here for pics of the sticker.

[Update][2012-05-12] Read Bo’s Coffee’s blog post here: Click me.

Bo’s Coffee (Terraces) FREE DRINK UPSIZE on 4sqDay

2012/04/11

It’s official! Bo’s Coffee (Terraces) in Ayala Center Cebu will join the world in celebrating Foursquare Day on April 16 (Mon). If you check-in their Foursquare venue from 7:45 – 10:00PM, any drink you order is automatically UPSIZED for FREE! Just show your checked-in phone to the barista. Take note: ONE checked-in user, ONE upsize.

Plus, you also get to pick any ONE of these official Foursquare FREEBIES: (1) a Foursquare badge pin, (2) a Foursquare logo sticker, or (3) a Foursquare tip sticker. No purchase necessary. Just show up, check-in at Bo’s Coffee (Terraces), and look for the guy handing them out in the area. That’s me, obviously.

If you’re a business owner, you can also ask for a Foursquare cling sticker. Stick them on your shop’s glass door or window, and tell your customers to check-in! #awesome

AND because it’s Foursquare Day, we’ll be attempting to unlock the first-ever SWARM badge in Cebu. On April 16 (Mon), from 7:45 – 10:00PM, stay checked-in at Bo’s Coffee (Terraces). When we hit 50 checked-in users, we’ll start unlocking that elusive SWARM badge. So, come be a part of history. Check-in with us in Foursquare! RSVP here.

How I Solved the ROOTCON 6 Easter Egg Hunt

2012/04/09

ROOTCON, an annual hacker conference and Information Security gathering in the Philippines, launched an Easter Egg hunt last night. The first to submit the codes got a 50% discount at the ROOTCON 6 event in Cebu Parklane International Hotel this coming Sept 7 (Fri) – Sept 8 (Sat), 2012.

It was 11PM, and I had nothing better to do. So I challenged myself to the hunt, which involved 5 Easter Eggs. And before I tell you how I solved all 5, here’s a DISCLAIMER: I have no hacking background, and I’m a complete noob when it comes to hacking. I don’t even know anybody in the scene, except for @not_1337, @Chaoz, and @semprix. But we all know I’m just dropping names. #KissAss

Egg #1 was pretty easy. It had something to do with source code. To crack the egg, I did a View Page Source in Firefox. Code: You.

Egg #2 was braille, but I didn’t know that at first, even with the “3 blind mice” clue. So, I just googled for “six dots”, and found… nothing. Then, it hit me to look up for braille. I found a guide, and came up with the code: HACK.

Egg #3 was probably the toughest of them all. I mean… Where does a clueless guy even start with this?

Is that even a programming language? To solve this one, I had to ask for a hint in StackOverflow (BEST tech Q&A site ever!). Armed with the UUDecode clue, I found an online service that gave me the code: therootcon.

Egg #4 was second easiest, cookies! Just use Cookies Manager+ in Firefox, and you’re all set. Code: 3a5t3r.

Egg #5 was second most difficult. How do you undress a picture (I cropped it. Sorry!) that seems to have come out from a Playboy photoshoot? Do you use Photoshop, and do naughty things with it?

Thinking it had something to do with stenography, I downloaded ImageHide and SilentEye. Unfortunately, neither of them worked. As a last resort, after doing fruitless Google and DuckDuckGo searches, I opened up my trusty Notepad++ and opened the image. Blimey! Not exactly the best way to solve it, but there it was, the last code: EGG.

So, the complete code is: You HACK therootcon 3a5t3r EGG. Well, that was fun, especially for a n00b! For @_rootcon_‘s official solutionclick here.

:: By the way, I need more Dropbox space for putting up my files on the Cloud. If you would be so kind to register under my referral link, that would be just awesome. You get 2GB of FREE space, while I get an additional 500MB (You will too, when you refer other folks!)
